about nu media NU MEDIA is an association of volunteers focusing on communication and new media. “New media” is a generic definition for each and every unconventional way to spread any type of information. That’s the new way of communicating. SMS, Internet, digital photography, mobiletv, webtv, podcast, ipod, psp, video on demand, outdoor tv, cd rom, web 2.0, web casting, email broadcast, e-commerce, online advertising and much more. Our choice of spelling our name NU (instead of NEW) MEDIA was not casual or an attempt to sound more “international”. On the contrary, “NU” (nhoo) is the way an Italian would pronounce “new”, especially if coming from the city of Naples or its surroundings, as most of us do. We felt this was an important tribute to our culture and a sign of our efforts in our territory (Campania, Italy). The other main choice was to focus on media and communication. Our association is very diverse, benefiting from different members, whose skills cover different areas of communication; psychologists, sociologists, IT specialists, artists, united through their interest for the mass media. Too often underestimated, even by those who should promote them instead, the new media are the main focus of our association. Through the skills and capacities of our members and with the precious help of our instruments, we strive to promote cultural activities, projects, educational meetings, and anything that favors the melting and the encounter of traditional arts and new technologies. Our aim is to increase the knowledge of the new generation and to strengthen their confidence in the new instruments that they can use to reach their goals. Years ago we could only dream of the technologies that we have today to communicate or to make our ideas come true. At the dawn of Internet, big and prestigious websites used to pay journalists to fill their pages. Today journalists write their own blog and are media themselves. With the elimination of the middle-man and a true open access, the network can be enjoyed by anybody, with incredible benefits. NU MEDA believes that the new media are a public good, just like public parks or lights on the street, just like healthcare or water. Each and every member of a community should be able to have the instruments to communicate its ideas, the instruments to grow them while growing at the same time, at no charge. Following this perspective, NU MEDIA aims at becoming a new media NETWORK. Being a NETWORK means creating new relationships at multiple levels, sharing ideas and experiences, shaping frameworks that allow people to communicate openly and to free their artistic skills in a new egalitarian manner.
